Materials Needed:

  • Playdough (2 colours or more adds visual interest)
  • Cardboard cut into a butterfly shape
  • Gemstones or loose parts for decorating
  • Curious hands & a creative little mind

How to Play:

  1. Cut out a simple butterfly shape from cardboard to use as your base.
  2. Roll and press small pieces of playdough to fill the wings.
  3. Add gemstones or loose parts to decorate and create patterns.
  4. Talk about what you’re making as you go – colours, shapes and designs.
  5. Step back and admire your butterfly, then keep creating new ones.

Extend at home by:

Asking “What pattern can we make next?”

Exploring symmetry – “Can we make both sides the same?”

Mixing colours to create new shades for the wings

Counting and sorting gemstones as you decorate

Telling a story about your butterfly and where it might fly

Why This Activity Rocks:

Develops Fine Motor Control – Rolling, pressing and placing small pieces of playdough builds hand strength, coordination and control needed for writing and everyday tasks.

Encourages Creativity & Expression – Designing and decorating a butterfly invites children to explore colours, patterns and their own unique ideas.

Builds Early Maths Awareness – Adding gemstones and creating patterns introduces counting, sorting and early pattern recognition in a hands-on way.

Supports Focus & Calm – The repetitive, gentle motions of shaping and decorating help children slow down, concentrate and regulate.

Explores Symmetry & Awareness – Creating matching wings helps children begin to understand balance and “same on both sides.”

Boosts Confidence & Independence – Finishing their butterfly gives children a sense of pride and ownership in what they’ve created.
