Exploring with Playdough!

Earth’s Layers

A hands-on way for kids to discover the different layers of our planet using playdough!

Perfect for ages 5yrs+ | Supervision recommended | Great for group or individual play

Materials Needed:

  • Playdough in red, orange, yellow, and brown (or any colours to represent Earth’s layers)
  • A circular base (cardboard or a plate)
  • A playdough-safe tool (like a plastic knife or cutter)

How to Play:

  1. Build the Earth – Start by rolling a small red ball for the inner core.
  2. Layer It Up – Flatten orange playdough and wrap it around the red ball to create the outer core.
  3. Add the Mantle – Use yellow playdough to cover the outer core, forming the mantle.
  4. Top It Off – Finish with a thin layer of brown or blue-green for the crust, adding land and oceans!
  5. Slice & Discover – Cut the model in half to reveal the layers inside and explore how the Earth is structured.
